“You are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with”
We’ve all heard or read this at some point in our lives. Think of when you were a kid and your parents tried to shelter you from hanging out with a certain crowd. There was merit to that. If you want to become something or start to make something a habit, it’s the easiest to start spending time with people who do or value the same things.
As adults, we have complete control of who we surround ourselves with.
Are you surrounding yourself with people who believe in you?
People who build you up even when you’re not around?
People who respectfully challenge your beliefs and promote growth?
People who have the same core values?
People who will walk along side you when things get hard?
Think of the flip side of that:
Being surrounded with people who are closed minded and stuck in their ways.
People who try to undermine your successes.
People who don’t value quality conversation and quality time.
People who show no interest in you when it’s not convenient for them.
I’m not sure about you, but I’m trying to hang out with people that check the boxes in the first group. The good news? We have complete control in who we spend our time with and associate with. The better news? It is NEVER too late to make changes and edit your life and beliefs.
We are nothing without the people that believe in us and want us to be our true selves. People thrive in environments where they feel empowered to do so.
This community could look different to everyone. It could be your immediate family, your friends, your gym community, your running group, your work friends, etc.
Do you want to be someone who values and prioritizes movement and exercise? Look at the people in your immediate circle. Do they prioritize movement and exercise? You want to read more books? Find people in your life that love reading. I bet you’ll start reading more often.
These examples are physical things we can do. The real secret is finding people who you can be your complete self with and have deeper, meaningful conversations with that promote self growth. Do you ever leave a conversation and feel energized and motivated? Draw awareness to when that happens. Think of who that person was with and what the topic was. Make it a point to have more conversations with that person or group more often.
At Empowered, we partner with you on your life journey not just from a physical standpoint, but a mental and emotional one as well. Your overall well-being is something we value, and we strive to fall into that first bucket of people for each and every one of you.
